If you caught my recent video, you know that I was planning on getting my first tattoo at age 68. Even though we’re living in a “tattoo age,” I had to think long and hard about, first, getting one, and then, what would it be?!
It’s now a done deal… and I have pictures to prove it!
First, I answered my own question about how do we know that tattoo art goes back more than 5-thousand years?! After all, I wondered, how would archeologists ever see tattoos on decomposed bodies? Well, silly me. It turns out that the body of the man given the nickname: Ötzi, the Iceman, was buried and well-preserved beneath an Alpine glacier along the Austrian-Italian border about 5,300 years ago. Ötzi had 61 tattoos – black lines across various parts of his body.

But Ötzi’s Not the Oldest!
Scientists say that the tattoos found on the Iceman suggest that social and/or therapeutic tattooing practices existed before his time and it’s likely that as dating techniques improve, we may discover even older tattooed mummies.
So that means I’m in good company with my hand poke tattoo – although methods have obviously improved since holes were punched in Ötzi’s skin and charcoal ash rubbed into them. It’s suggested that his tattoos were for therapeutic reasons – as they were located near joint and spinal degeneration. I chose my tattoo solely for the joy it brings me and the personal significance it holds, which I shared in my previous video.
Suffice it to say, I chose the kundalini snake as it’s a symbol representing a profound connection to the divine within. As I grow older, I like this visual of my life’s journey — signifying continual growth, spiritual depth, and my inclusion in the everlasting cycle of renewal. Now, with two-thirds of my life behind me, I cherish my belief that I’m part of the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth.
I had my kundalini snake placed on the inside of my left forearm, where it’s mostly seen by me. It’s still very new but I have to say I love looking at the intricacy and “motion” of it (maybe I’m in some kind of honeymoon stage with it? Anyway, I’m going to leave you with two comments thoughtfully sent to me when I shared that I was going to do this.
“Oh Please! Do not do this! You have such beautiful, smooth, lovely, white skin. Don’t ruin it with a snake or anything else for that matter. And YES it’s going to hurt. And YES it’s with you for the rest of your life. May look “cool” (really?) now but what will that snake look like when you’re 80 or 90 or beyond?”

However, my artwork might even be more interesting – with all the soft folds of skin enveloping my snake;)
Besides, it’s an exercise in not caring what other people think 🫣. I did it for my own pleasure. But I can check-in back with you on it in about 15 years!
