Funny isn’t it, how most of us don’t think twice about walking out of the doc’s office with a prescription or two (or three or four – the yearly average is more than 17 prescriptions per person!). While the spectrum of side effects can be mind boggling there are also real concerns about what we call drug-drug interactions, where using prescription drugs together can increase or decrease the effectiveness or ramp up the side effects of the drugs.
But cannabis – a plant medicine that’s about as safe as you can get – is still looked at askance by many. This stigma is a long-standing remnant of how effectively the War on Drugs propaganda (including the DARE program) instilled fear and paranoia about using cannabis.
Thankfully, the walls are coming down
Science, of course, is leading the way in breaking the barriers. For one, the more we know about the endocannabinoid system, which receives and uses the chemicals in cannabis, the more we realize how important it is to the overall health of all our other biological systems – and especially our nervous system.
That’s why research is discovering that supplementation of the chemicals in cannabis, called cannabinoids, is a vital support in quelling anxiety, depression, anger, shame (self-doubt) and other troubling emotions generally thrown-in to the catch-all term Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
One of the star cannabis chemicals often cited for this symptom relief is cannabidiol, known simply as CBD. As a clinical nutritionist and a Registered Dietitian-Nutritionist, I’m a long-time advocate of careful and targeted nutritional supplementation. CBD as a daily supplement can offer relief for the emotional “fire” of stress and the fight or flight syndrome.
When paired with specific active meditation tools, the judicious use of cannabis can be pivotal in supporting people in releasing difficult emotions. Many who work with me use CBD only and experience remarkable outcomes.
