Like wistfully saying goodbye to a former lover you’ll never see again, I’m whispering a bittersweet farewell to my Medical MJ Card in Florida – letting it go as I move to my new home country of Portugal.
A fond farewell to my Florida
Medical Canna card
There’s a common misconception/myth that Portugal is a free-for-all with canna and other substances being legalized. But that’s not the case as I discussed earlier in this blog. So as you can well imagine, I regret seeing my Florida MMJ card expire given that it was my ticket to legal and tested canna in most any shape and form – albeit Adult Use (what we used to call recreational canna) is still illegal in that state.
The Sunshine State, in matters of canna, is a far cry from Denver where I used to live – that city is a mecca of MJ legalization for both Medical and Adult Use – and is now taking a leading role in psilocybin legalization (ok, decriminalization but if it looks and sounds like a duck…).

Beyond the little brown paper bag 🤠

A fond farewell to my Florida Medical Cannabis card
So here I am in Europe – in southern Portugal, about two weeks into getting situated and settled… and pondering what the canna underground market looks like.
I have friends in U.S. states where MJ is still illegal who describe robust bootleg cannabis economies conducted with a professional online flair. When you can get on with them as a “subscriber,” you can receive weekly menus of MJ choices in encrypted social media along with delivery services to your door. I’ll be interested in discovering the approach here in Portugal.
From my experience, wherever canna is not legal, there will always be people offering services through other “channels” to cater to those looking for the herb. After all, remember the War on Drugs years when nothing was legal? The canna “legacy” growers and providers flourished. If you’re old enough to recall that, it was all about what you scored in that little brown paper bag. 🤠
Ah, the stories that can be told!
“Plant-Assisted Emotions Therapist” is always an entree to fascinating conversations.
Anyway, I’m looking forward to discovering the MJ ins-and-outs in this environment. Usually it’s easy when people discover that my emotions work entails the judicious use of canna (and psilocybin microdosing). All I have to do is hand them my card; they see my allegiance and presto, I’m in the club.
As you know, my work includes plant medicines for emotional recovery. Portugal could make good use of them. Granted I’m a newbie in this country but I’m learning that Portugal consumes the most antidepressants of all European countries and some regions of the country have the highest rate of suicide in Europe. Given the success that Americans have with canna in moderating their emotions to feel better, it’s clear I have my work cut out for me in this country.

With Love,

Becca

Another clue for connecting… who could resist this smiling woman of a certain age wearing her colors. Got this hemp hat in a sweet little hippie cafe and mercado in Figueira not far from where I live in Lagos.
